Club Development Options

Dear Members,

This page is here to inform you, and then keep you updated, on the development options that we have identified for the Club, and that were presented to over 80 members on Thursday October 3rd.

UPDATE February 2025

We held our AGM recently, on the 28th January, during which resolutions were put forward to move to 3 Padel courts (on existing hard court 3), moving courts 1 & 2 and grass 5 & 6 to clay and further exploring creating indoor courts.  These plans, see below, were shared with members between October and December 2024.

We were delighted that our development resolutions were approved.  As a result, the Committee is now moving ahead with implementing Padel and clay court plans and further investigating indoor courts.  Last year, the committee shared its key priorities and priorities for 2025-26 can be read here.

Previous Updates

As promised, in our communication to members at the AGM in December last year, we have been investigating what might be possible at Banbury Road North.  We appointed a planning consultant to seek pre-planning advice from Oxford City Council, focused around how a full planning application involving indoor courts, Padel courts and a new clubhouse, shared with the hockey club, might be viewed.  The response was broadly favourable, with previous obstacles facing some of our predecessors in the form of the green belt now not applicable – mainly due to the new development to the north of our site.

Following this, we engaged Scott Allaway of Active Sports Construction to interpret the advice and produce options as to where these facilities might be best placed, should we wish to proceed.  Scott also worked with the Club to produce some outline costs and potential funding options, which were presented at the meeting on 3rd October.

We have considered a number of different options for where any indoor courts and Padel could be placed onsite, also taking into account the existing planning permission we hold on grass courts 1, 2, 5 & 6 to convert these into artificial clay courts with floodlighting.  The proximity of properties around the site has led to the proposed location for indoor courts and Padel.  We believe members are also keen on retaining a number of grass courts, whilst having greater access to courts all year round, and we have considered this as part of the options we are sharing.

Consultation period

Now that we are sharing the options that we have identified with members we are keen to hear your views.

We are inviting you to submit any comments or feedback to northoxfordtennis@gmail.com regarding the development by Monday 4th November, following which we will hold an informal evening at the Club, where the committee team will be on hand to answer any questions that you might have.

Once we have considered your feedback, we will put forward a resolution for members to vote on at the next AGM, which we are provisionally planning to hold on 22nd January 2025.
